About Wellington

Wellington is an old market town that developed from a Saxon settlement. It is set astride the original A38 Bristol to Exeter road amidst the beauty of its natural environs in the Vale of Taunton. The town has been augmented by a splendid architectural heritage. It was historically the heart of an agricultural community which later developed as a centre of excellence and innovation in the wool industry. With this proud industrial heritage and very much a working town with a wide variety of businesses, Wellington produces the finest quality beds, furniture, aerosols and cloth.

As well as its industrial past Wellington is famous for its links with the Duke of Wellington, who took his title from the town. The town's most famous landmark is Wellington Monument, which stands on the Blackdown Hills to the south of Wellington. The monument is a 175foot column built in honour of the 'Iron Duke' to celebrate his victory over Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo.

Wellington is a green and pleasant town to visit at any time of year, but in the summer months looks particularly pleasing with its stunning floral displays. It is a regular entrant in the Britain in Bloom competition and in 2001, 2002 and 2004 won the Portman Cup for the best medium sized town in the South West region. Wellington town centre boasts a unique set of specialist shops, several of which have won awards for supplying high quality produce.

Wellington's population exceeds 13,000 and is growing year on year. Reflecting this growth the Wellington Chamber of Commerce is a vibrant, active organisation, there to assist new and incoming businesses to the town. To encourage more shoppers into the the town the chamber have also introduced a loyalty parking scheme.

Wellington is unique in that it has retained its own cinema, has an active arts association and a very strong sporting community.
